Dogs and their owners at every stage of life can benefit from this course
- Puppys - it is good to get them used to being calmly handled and touched, and prevent behavioural issues such as not wanting paws touched later in life. They are also growing at a really rapid rate and so hands on sensory work is really good to help them gain ( kinaesthetic awareness) knowledge of where their bodies are in space and time. and prevent muscle injuries associated with rapid growth phases.
- Anxious dogs - Just like in humans massage is really good for activating the parasympathetic nervous system ( vagus nerve) and helping to reduce stress and cortisol levels, this can have knock on effects with behaviour.
- Healthy dogs - Massage can be really good for maintaining their healthy status, preventing problems, highlighting problems in their infancy before they excapaletin to anything more significant.
- Sporting dogs - Massage can help promote recovery, facilitate removal of metabolic waste products such as lactate and speed up recovery and optimise fitness/strength gains from training. It can help to normalise tone and reduce muscle tension which in turn reduces incidence of injury.
- Recovering Dogs - Dogs recovering from injury or surgery can benefit on a whole host of ways, it can help to reduce pain pathways and reduce the likelihood of chronic pathways developing. Promote circulation and lymphatic drainage. It can help ease the muscles being overused with compensatory pathways ( overusing front legs because a back leg is injured)
- Senior dogs - Massage can really help these guys to maintain joint range of motion, improve circulation, keep the muscles supple and pliable. Promote lymphatic drainage, and general wellness. It can also reduce the need or quantity of medications needed to maintain comfort levels.
- Owners - All of the above points have stated how good massage is for the dogs, but in reality it is just as good for us owners. There are MANY research papers stating how hands on our furry friends raises our feel good hormone levels, reduces cortisol and promotes our own wellbeing. This is magnified further when we know it is also doing good for them.
NO!! all you need is somewhere comfy to sit ( for both of you ) your hands and an open mind
